Tranquil Master Bedroom Makeover

I CANNOT WAIT to show you this extreme transformation of my friend, Pari’s master bedroom. It really is quite a dramatic difference. She was kind enough to let me come in and tear apart her room over the course of a few weekends.

The only thing missing is of course the jewelry for the room…a chandelier that will replace the ceiling fan. With a little photoshop magic…voila.




They were ready to make some big changes and sold their old bedroom set on Craigslist.


 


 


You can see in the mood board of the room below, how just repositioning furniture can make a HUGE IMPACT! It really opens up the space this way.




By mixing old and new pieces, we were able to achieve a room with character and balance. This industrial table made out of pipe legs from an old factory in New York City was the first piece purchased for the room at a flea market. It was really our muse for the entire design concept.




An old, beat up dresser similar to this one I found while out thrifting, was given a French makeover.




 

Do you recognize the chair in the corner? Yep, its one of the infamous spider back chairs with a new upholstered seat and metallic silver weathered finish!





 

I am SO envious of that fireplace! Can you imagine on a rainy day, curling up in bed next to that thing? I may move in…




Incorporating a gallery wall solved the challenge of how what to do with the massive wall opposite the bed. The added bonus is that it brings personality to their space.






  
 


We tried several different rugs in the room but when Pari found this one, she knew it was the perfect fit. I think I might have to find a place in my house for one now too.




We found this lantern lamp out in Canton.




and of course….the infamous Seahorse Wall Art that I made using leftover wood floor boards…phew, that was such a long project!

Thrifty Design for a Couple’s Dining Room

So you may not know that just because a girl can wield a paint brush, doesn’t necessarily mean that’s where her talents end. (WOW, that could be taken out of context.)


Let’s try that again…what I’m trying to say is, that just because I’m known for refinishing furniture, doesn’t mean that’s ALL I’m doing these days at Urban Farmhouse.


Lately my business has taken a shift and I’ve started creating rooms around my furniture for clients.


Take Kerri and Tim Rovi for example. They scored a great deal on this solid wood 65” round dining table at a local thrift.





They knew they wanted me to refinish it, but after learning a little more about their style at a design consultation at their new home, I came up with a custom plan for the couple.


While on the tour of their house, I spotted this amazing bouquet on display in the corner of their guestroom. Isn’t it great? Its made out of vintage brooches and was Kerri’s bridal bouquet. It sparked the inspiration for my design boards.


 

I knew that blue had to be incorporated into the design after seeing it emerge throughout their home in just about every room. Kerri, like me, tends to lean towards blending vintage with modern elements and likes a calming color palette.


The dining room needed to be sophisticated and a little bit glamorous but in keeping with a young and somewhat relaxed feel.





The fun part about the plan I come up with for my clients, is that it usually centers around furniture pieces I go out searching for. Then the transformation begins! The result is a one-of-a-kind, budget-friendly room that was designed especially for you.


In the case of the Rovi’s, I had so much fun that I came up with three similar boards for them to choose from.





All three boards centered around their table and the need for a china hutch to display some special heirloom pieces.








I’m happy to report that they loved the boards, saying:


“These are AMAZING! We’re still mulling over 1 and 2, can’t decide if we like the white hutch or the white table but I’m leaning towards two because I LOVE that chandelier with the white table. Thank you so much for all of your hard work on this, you’ve hit it on the nail!”


After some deliberation they have decided to go with Board #1.
I’ve already found their china hutch and 6 dining chairs that we plan to reupholster in a vibrant peacock blue.

I know what you’re thinking, but have a little faith in me! After the refinish, the chairs will get their centers and seats upholstered in the pretty peacock fabric.

The hutch will house Kerri’s grandmother’s china, so it had to be see-through glass. I think that the piece I was able to find for them is a pretty close match and once refinished, should look more modern and clean-lined in the room.

Christmas Cheer Using What’s On Hand…

It seems I start decorating for Christmas earlier and earlier these days. I always have a house full of relatives for Thanksgiving, and I like having it out of the way before it gets busy around here. Its also cozy having our turkey dinner by the tree.

I try to use what’s on hand, so I don’t go out and blow money on decorations for two months out of the year. I’ve accumulated quite a lot of holiday stuff over the years though. A lot of it I made or repurposed.

My artificial tree in the living room was one that I bought for my Urban Farmhouse suite last year. I got it for $40 while out thrifting! Its full, classic and stands over 10 feet tall.

 

I wanted to do something really relaxed and whimsical for the mantel this year. I had a large vintage frame that I used as a chalkboard at Urban Farmhouse over the years. I originally planned to use the chalkboard and write a cute saying on it in white chalk, but then I kept thinking about the subway art that’s so in right now.

I found this great Free Printable Christmas Subway Art that I thought would be perfect for the frame. You can get it here.

Some of the other things I had on hand were vintage decorations that I just used in a new way this year.

  

For the formal living and sitting room, I wanted to keep it a little more sophisticated…again, just adding touches with things I had on hand.

 

The tree in our front room was another great find on Craigslist. It was still sealed in the box and was originally purchased for a model home that sold before the holidays. I think I’ll try one of those no-sew ruffle tree skirts I keep seeing on Pinterest….the one in the picture is too dinky for this tree.

 

I always like extending the décor into other rooms in the house in small doses as well, including the bedroom.

I heart the Subway Art that’s popping up everywhere these days. The simple black background and the large white letters that pop off the canvas. It’s just, well…cool, right?

Yes, I was a fan of the standard Subway Art, until I saw this and my jaw dropped!

 

Now this is MY kind of Subway Art! I love the wooden weathered planks and the silhouette Seahorse. Check out the message hidden within the words that reads, “Follow the River and you will find the Sea.”

I have a huge blank wall in my front room when you walk in my house that is screaming for some wall art. Now my wheels are turning again! Definitely food for thought!
